Introduction: The process of aging is essentially defined by a decline in various physical and mental processes that take place within the human body. Healthy aging is not only accompanied by a decline in cognitive processing, but also motor function, in particular an increase in the slowness of movements and a loss of coordination. Functional brain imaging has indicated that age-related changes in brain function are diverse, represented in part by overactivation and underactivation in distinct brain regions. In order to characterize changes of movement-related brain activity in healthy aging, a quantitative, voxel-wise meta-analysis of functional brain imaging data was performed.
